Spatial connectedness of Dutch municipalities via classmate networks (2015-2023)

This data product quantifies spatial connectedness between Dutch municipalities by linking classmate pairs to municipalities where students live and where schools are located. This data product covers six educational levels: BO (primary education), SO (special education), VO (secondary education), MBO (secondary vocational education), HBO (higher professional education), and WO (academic or university education). There are three types of CSV files in this dataset: (1) frequency tables of aggregated student-pair counts stratified by year (2015–2023), educational level (excluding MBO), and classmate cap (the maximum number of epidemiologically relevant classmate links a student is allowed to have, 50, 100 and 200 for 2021, 100 for other years). For all educational levels except MBO (secondary vocational education), these tables are available in two forms, namely the 2d version (home municipality of student A, home municipality of student B) and the 3d version (plus the shared school municipality). MBO student pairs are only stratified by the two home municipalities, as information on school location is limited; (2) a table of masked student-pair totals per year per educational level, where counts below 10 are suppressed as NA; and (3) summary statistics (mean degree, number of classes, number of students) per network stratum. Three accompanying R scripts are also included for reproducibility within CBS remote environment, which is accessible only upon reasonable request to CBS Microdata. This dataset can be used in dynamic models to model the transmission of respiratory infectious disease between regions and to assess the effectiveness of spatially-tailored control measures. It complements an earlier colleague network connectedness dataset submitted under the same project (doi:10.34894/XF7IAD).
